He marched over to Britain, lied about his age, and joined the Royal Flying Corps (R.F.C.), which later became known as the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.). At age 14, he was the youngest pilot, and soon became an ace, shooting down eight enemy aircraft and balloons. His first book, Flying from the Ground Up, was about how to fly an airplane in 1930. Robert worked continually at writing for pulp magazines such as Popular Sport, G-Men, Battle Aces, and the one that he wrote, Dusty Ayres and his Battle Birds. In the 1940's, he wrote his most famous works, the Dave Dawson War Adventure Series and the Red Randall series.
